South Derry Cumann na mBunscol Division 1 Boys’ Football Championship Winners 2024
Congratulations to the boys Gaelic Football team who won the South Derry Cumann na mBunscol Division 1 Boys’ Football Championship today at Glen GAC Maghera.
The boys were drawn in a tough group and got off to a rocky start losing their first two games to St. John’s PS, Swatragh and St. Patrick’s PS, Glen. The boys regrouped and recorded two great victories over Anahorish PS and St. Columba’s PS, Kilrea come third in their group to reach the Quarter Finals. They came out in top against St. Brigid’s PS, Tirkane in the Quarter Final on a scoreline of 2:02 to 0:01. A Semi Final meeting against St. John’s PS, Swatragh who had beaten Derrychrin in the group game was a titanic battle producing end to end football, with the boys coming out on the right side of the result this time around, on a scoreline of 3:04 to 2:02. In the Final the boys produced a brilliant performance to overcome Holy Family PS, Magherafelt 3:05 to 0:01.
Thank you to their teacher Mr. O'Neill who prepared the boys so well for today with after school coaching and participation in previous tournaments. Mr. O’Neill and Mr.McElroy were extremely proud of all the boys as they displayed their core school values throughout the whole tournament. Along with their school values, the effort, determination, resilience and sportsmanship was so evident throughout the tournament.
Thank you to Doire Cumann na mBunscol for hosting a brilliant tournament as always led by our previous Principal, Mr. McCormack. A special thank you to Watty Grahams Glen GAC for their excellent facilities and hospitality and also to the referees for officiating on the day.
A fantastic achievement by the boys and they can now look forward to the All County Finals evening on Friday 14th June at Owenbeg.
