🔴🟢🏆Doire Cumann Na mBunscol Double Champions 2024 🏆🔴🟢
Friday 14th June 2024 is a date that will go down in history for Derrychrin Primary School. A momentous day for both our girls’ & boys’ teams being crowned All County Doire Cumann Na mBunscol Division One Champions for 2024! A double win and an incredible achievement for our school.
On Friday morning, our girls travelled to Owenbeg and won both group games against St. Colmcille’s PS, Claudy and Sacred Heart PS, Derry to set up a final against St John’s PS, Dernaflaw. They produced a tremendous display in the final and showed what a talented group of girls they really are, as they won on a scoreline of 4:04 to 2:01. This meant they were crowned back-to-back champions after historically winning the All-County Division One title for the first time last year.
Then on Friday evening the boys made the journey to Owenbeg for the Annual Francis Lagan Finals night. They overcame Sacred Heart PS, Derry and St John’s PS, Dernaflaw in the group stages to top their group. They then met Holy Family PS, Magherafelt in the semi-final in a highly contested game but our boys dug deep, showing immense grit and determination against a very strong side to win their place in the final. In the final they faced Broadbridge Primary School, but our boys continued to showcase their talent, skills and relentless determination that earned them their title to become the All-County Division One winners for the first time in their history.
The boys and girls were an absolute joy to watch, and we are so incredibly proud of them all. Not only did they showcase their talents but the way they played - teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship are to be commended.
Thank you to all parents and family members for travelling to both finals and showing huge support to the children. It was also great to see our parish neighbours Ballylifford PS reach the finals in both competitions also and we thank them for their kind support in both finals.
Thank you to all the Derrychrin teachers and staff who help prepare the children, encourage them every day to live out our school values both in a learning and sporting context. Special thanks to Ballinderry Shamrocks GAC for the huge dedication and commitment in the coaching of all the children and their support to Derrychrin PS.
Thank you to Doire Cumann Na mBunscol for organising two wonderful events, promoting Gaelic Games in all codes during the year and providing opportunities for many children to experience.
We look forward to having a special celebration day for both teams next week. We will have team photos taken and have them added to the ‘Champions Wall’ at Derrychrin!
