Award-winning Scottish author Stuart Reid visits Derrychrin PS
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming award-winning Scottish author Stuart Reid to Derrychrin PS and what an engaging and enjoyable day we all experienced.
Stuart began the day with a whole school reading session with the children in the hall which was interactive, inspirational, captivating and most of all great fun. The children listened attentively and participated fully as Stuart talked to them about being an author discussing all the books he has published. Stuart’s first book won the Silver Medal at the Forward National Literature Awards and his latest book 'Grandpa Jock and the Incredible Iron-Bru-Man Incident' was launched at the Edinburgh Festival.
He talked about why he loves his job, how he can inspire children to read for pleasure and how to turn many books into drama or films. He answered any questions the children had and signed copies for them at the end.
Our P6 and P7 children got the opportunity to experience his entertaining creative writing workshops where he shared his love of and tips for being a successful story writer, looking at plot, setting and characters.
In the afternoon, he met with parents and family members to highlight the importance of developing a love for reading with children and how doing so impacts positively on their future. He shared his own reading interests and listened intently as parents also shared their love and enjoyment for reading. He also recommended many other authors such as Percy Jackson, Eoin Colfer, Jacqueline Wilson, Cathy Cassidy and Alex Ryder to encourage everyone the importance of reading. Thank you to all parents and family members who attended.
Stuart complimented everyone at Derrychrin PS.
'The pupils were absolutely fantastic with such great energy and enthusiasm during the reading assembly. They were an absolute joy to present to, and work with throughout the creative writing sessions with wonderful contributions. Thank you to all the teachers for their support and participation'
